Which JDK are you using?

JDK 6 has been out for a while. We mentioned before that once JDK6 is out, we will stop supporting JDK1.4.2 as we only want to support two JDK versions at the same time. However we are not sure if this is acceptable to our users. Thus we created this survey so that we can see how people feel about it.

We still use JDK 1.4.1, but that's only for some low level stuff that does not affect our Jide use.

Jide support for only Java 5.0 and 6.0 is fine.

Will you provide a "bug fix only" branch for 1.4.x support?

That was the plan. 1.9.5 is just released. We plan to make 1.9.5 a bug fix only branch for JDK14. But as we all know, it's not fun to keep two working branches. That's why we want to see how many people are still using JDK14 to see if we have any other options.

New development is being done in 1.5 but we will have deployed versions of our s/w using 1.4 in the field for 4-5 years.

We can easily live with a bug fix only branch. As a source license customer we could even live w/o that with a little help from JIDE if we can't fix the issue ourself.

JDK 6 will absolutely be supported. This survey is more about how much effort and what kind of support we should continute providing for JDK1.4.2.

1.4 is not used anymore. We are fully on java 6 now

It's time to move on to make things better. As far as I'm concerned, you can focus on jdk 5 & 6 and get rid of 1.4.

We are. We pretty much ignore the support for JDK1.4.2 right now and start to use JDK 5 or 6 only features. For example, generic is used everywhere. The jar is compiled using JDK6 with target/source=1.5.

My company has 2 branches, one that is based on Java 1.5, and another that still supports Java 1.4.2. We still have users on older Macs running 1.4 that cannot switch to 1.5 without upgrading their OS. Just noticed that this thread is quite old, its now 2009, but it will be quite some time before we could even think about moving to 1.6, mostly because of a significant Mac user base. To the best of my knowledge, Java 6 is only available in OS X Leopard. Most Mac users are still running Tiger.
